Women have this innate ability to read the mind of their partners just by looking into their eyes. They can frame their emotions and thoughts very easily. Researchers from Indian origin say that the ability to interpret may be a result of Gene influence. The research shows that the genetic variant on chromosome 3 in women is associated with their ability to read minds through eyes. It is known as cognitive empathy. The closest Genes on chromosome 3 include LRRN1 ( Leucine Rich Neuronal 1) which is highly active in the striatum, a part of a brain. It has been reported by brain scanning that striatum plays an important role in cognitive empathy.
The researcher Varun Warrier, a doctoral student at the University of Cambridge said, ” This is an important step forward for the field of Social Neuroscience and adds one more piece to puzzle of what may cause variation in cognitive empathy.”
20 years back, Scientists have built upon a study called “Reading the Mind in the Eyes” test. The study was published in journal ” Molecular Psychiatry” in which, the team analyzed cognitive empathy in 89,000 people. The results concluded that women on an average do score better in this test because of Gene influence. Also, researchers found that the genetic variant that added to the high score increases the risk of anorexia but not autism.
The researchers penned, “We are excited by this new discovery, and are now testing if the results replicate and exploring precisely what these genetic variants do in the brain, to give rise to individual differences in cognitive empathy.” This was explained by Simon Baron-Cohen, a professor at the University of Cambridge.
